Drone-friendly locations.

Socotra is a drone photographer's island — provided you fly in the right window. These are the locations where flying is straightforward, the views justify the battery, and the wind cooperates from November through February.

Jeddah transit risk

All Socotra flights now route through Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Saudi customs regularly confiscates consumer drones at the border — even in checked luggage — with no guarantee of return. If your drone is intercepted, you may not see it again.

The practical alternative: rent locally on Socotra. Tour operators typically keep two or three models (DJI Mini or equivalent) available for hire at around $150–$250 for the week, with a refundable deposit of $500–$700. Ask your operator when booking — availability is limited in peak season (November–February).

Common questions

Can you fly a drone on Socotra?+
Yes, but with conditions. Drones are permitted across most of the island, but you must declare them on arrival and pay a small fee. Several protected areas restrict altitude or require permission.
What's the best time of year for drone photography on Socotra?+
November through February. Wind speeds drop, the air is dry, and visibility is excellent. Outside this window the wind is often too strong for safe flight.
Where is drone flying restricted on Socotra?+
Around the airport, military installations, and inside cave systems. Some protected lagoons (Detwah, Shoab) require coordination with the local environmental authority — your guide handles this.
