Socotra Drone Guide 2026
How to fly legally on Socotra: the $100 permit process, Jeddah transit risks, recommended models for wind and heat, and what actually happens at customs.
The Permit
$100 USD cash, payable on arrival at Socotra Airport. Have exact change in clean, new bills.
Pre-register by email (your operator does this): drone make, model, serial/registration number — send at least 2 weeks before arrival. Confirm with your operator that this was done.
No public registry of no-fly zones — your guide tells you each morning what's permitted. Follow their instructions without exception.
Transit Risk: Jeddah Airport
Drones can be flagged at Jeddah Airport during transit. Pack drone in checked luggage, declare it. Never carry-on through Jeddah.
Always verify current transit rules with your operator before you travel — this changes.
What Your Operator Handles
Licensed operators handle customs clearance on arrival for declared drone gear.
Do not attempt to handle drone documentation independently. This is not the same as getting a permit for, say, a national park in Europe. The documentation goes through Yemeni authorities and your operator has the relationships and process.
Confirmation checklist before you fly: operator has emailed registration? Operator has confirmed clearance? You have $100 in clean USD? You have talked through no-fly zones for day 1?
Recommended Models for Socotra Conditions
Wind: Socotra trade winds average 15–30 km/h from mid-morning. DJI Mini 4 Pro is marginal in 25+ km/h. DJI Mavic 3 handles it better. Fly before 8am.
Heat: electronics in dark cases sitting on sand can reach 60°C+. Keep drone in shade. Land if the battery warning triggers from thermal not depletion.
Dust: Socotra's landscape throws fine sand. Check gimbal vents after every session. A filter on the lens is mandatory.
Baggage: 30 kg checked + 7 kg cabin on the Jeddah charter. Weigh your kit before departure and negotiate excess baggage with your operator upfront.
