Water at its most vivid. Walk the sandbar between the two lagoon bodies for the split-colour composition. · The inner lagoon catches warm light from the west. The outer section stays cool blue. The colour contrast doubles.

Light direction notes

Coastal orientation matters — check whether the shoreline faces east (sunrise) or west (sunset). Side-light from a low sun shapes the water best.

Drone is highly effective here for the double lagoon colour contrast. Calm winds in the morning. Altitude gives you both water bodies in a single frame — the composition doesn't work from ground level.

Conditions to avoid

Midday sun flattens contrast and burns out highlights; breezier afternoons can unsettle a tripod; outside oct, nov, dec, jan, feb, mar, conditions become unreliable.

Composition tips

Shoot from the sandbar dividing the two lagoon sections — you get both colour gradients in one frame with the sea beyond. For dolphin shots on the boat crossing, keep the camera on continuous burst from the bow.

Morning for water colour; sunset for the double lagoon glow. Mornings are the calmer half of the day; afternoons can be breezy, which matters most for drone work and for anything on the water. Socotra sits at about 12 degrees north, so the light windows barely move across the year — roughly the first 90 minutes after sunrise and the last 90 before sunset, at close to the same clock time whichever month you come.
What months can you visit Shoab Beach?+
Shoab Beach is at its best October to March, inside the island's wider October-to-April season. Outside that window the Khareef monsoon puts sustained winds across Socotra from roughly May to September — camping becomes impossible, boat trips stop, and most operators suspend trips altogether. The dates move from year to year and the Khareef sometimes arrives early, so a May departure carries real cancellation risk.
Can you swim at Shoab Beach?+
Swimming and snorkelling are part of a standard Socotra itinerary and gear is normally provided, but treat it as remote swimming: there are no lifeguards, no beach facilities, and no hospital on the island able to handle a serious injury. Mornings are calmest. Swimwear is fine on beaches away from settlements; near a village, cover up — Socotra is a conservative Muslim island and the norm is modest dress around communities.
Can you fly a drone at Shoab Beach?+
A drone permit is required anywhere on Socotra: $100 USD in cash, exact change, paid on arrival at the airport. It is an official requirement rather than an operator fee, and your operator must pre-register the make, model and serial number with the authorities at least two weeks before you fly. There is no published no-fly map — villages and residential areas, mosques and anything military are off-limits island-wide, and beyond that your guide's instruction each morning is the only authority. Where flying is cleared: Drone is highly effective here for the double lagoon colour contrast. Calm winds in the morning. Do you need a guide to visit Shoab Beach?+
Yes. Independent travel on Socotra is not permitted — every visitor enters through a licensed local operator, who arranges the entry permit, transport and access to protected areas. You do not need a Yemen visa; the permit is Socotra-specific and your operator applies for it before your flight. In practice this means Shoab Beach is reached as part of a guided itinerary rather than as a self-drive stop.
Is Shoab Beach safe to visit?+
Socotra has stayed out of Yemen's war — it lies roughly 380km offshore, and there is no record of a visitor being targeted in violence on the island. The real risk is not local: the island is served by about one flight a week, and in January 2026 several hundred tourists were stranded — some for more than ten days — when fighting on the mainland closed the air link. There are no ATMs and no hospital able to treat a serious injury. Build buffer days at both ends, carry more cash than the trip needs, and take insurance that names Yemen explicitly — standard policies exclude it.
