Why it's special

No other place on Socotra, and perhaps on Earth, concentrates so many of these extraordinary trees in a single accessible landscape. Camp overnight to shoot Milky Way arching over the canopy, then stay for the backlit amber sunrise.

Best at sunrise — the first warm light is the whole point · aerial work is genuinely worth it.

Best time to shoot

Sunrise to 1 hour after — mist burns off quickly on the plateau

Sunrise or sunset?

Best 30-40 minutes from first light. Mist layers between the trees at this altitude. Expose for the sky to let the tree canopy silhouette naturally. · Golden hour light filters through the canopy with warmer tones than morning. Less mist but valid for 30 minutes before sunset.

Light direction notes

East-facing at dawn. Backlight through the canopy from the east creates rim lighting on trunk edges and makes the resin glow.

Drone timing

Excellent drone conditions at dawn — wind is near zero on the plateau interior at first light. Open clearings between tree clusters serve as safe takeoff points. Wide sweeping passes over the canopy at low altitude reveal the mushroom-top geometry best.

Conditions to avoid

Midday sun flattens contrast and burns out highlights; outside oct, nov, dec, jan, feb, mar, apr, conditions become unreliable.

Composition tips

Shoot upward through the layered canopy rather than from above — the red resin trunk base and silver-grey branches create strong foreground interest. Include sky gaps between canopies for depth. For Milky Way: wide-angle with a single dramatic tree silhouette and arch overhead. Dragon blood resin tapping by local Bedouin is a compelling documentary subject.

Lens suggestions

Mid-range works best. A 35–85mm range isolates trees without flattening them.

Reality check

Golden hour and sunrise are the definitive windows — backlit translucent canopies glow amber. Milky Way shooting is excellent here due to zero light pollution. Camp overnight to catch both windows. Midday direct sun creates harsh shadows through the canopy and should be avoided.
