Why it's special

The single most photographed landscape in Socotra. These trees are 300+ years old, shaped by millennia of monsoon wind, and exist nowhere else on Earth. The plateau sits at ~1,200m so nights are cool even in April.

The case for Diksam Plateau

Best at sunrise — the first warm light is the whole point · aerial work is genuinely worth it.

Best time to shoot

Sunrise to 1 hour after — mist burns off quickly

Sunrise or sunset?

Best 30-40 minutes from first light. Mist layers between trees. Exposure for the sky rather than the foreground — let the trees silhouette. · Golden hour light through the canopy. Less mist than morning but warmer tones.

Light direction notes

East-facing at dawn. Backlight through the canopy from the east creates rim lighting on trunk edges.

Drone timing

Drone conditions are excellent at dawn — wind is near zero at altitude. Launch before sunrise if possible. The plateau has open clearings between tree clusters that work well as takeoff points.

Conditions to avoid

Midday sun flattens contrast and burns out highlights; outside oct, nov, dec, jan, feb, mar, apr, conditions become unreliable.

Composition tips

Shoot upward through the canopy layers rather than from above. The red resin trunk base and silver-grey branches create strong foreground interest. Include sky gaps between canopies. The curved plateau edge as background gives depth.

Lens suggestions

Mid-range works best. A 35–85mm range isolates trees without flattening them.

Reality check

Morning mist defines the Dragon Blood Tree silhouettes. The flat umbrella canopy catches diffused light perfectly for 30-40 minutes after dawn. Cloud cover helps — direct sun at midday is harsh. Nights are cool enough for comfortable overnight camping.
