The Best Time to Visit Socotra

The Window: October to April

Socotra has two seasons. From October through April, temperatures run 20–30°C, seas are calm enough for boat trips, and the island is accessible. This is when all tours run and when the island is at its best.

From May through September — the Khareef, or monsoon — sustained winds of 50 knots or more make camping impossible, boat landings dangerous, and many operators shut down entirely. Some years the Khareef starts early. Do not plan a June arrival hoping to catch the tail of the good season.

For Photographers: Go in April

April is the single best month for photography on Socotra:

  • Light quality: warm, low-angle morning light with little haze
  • Wind: usually calm until early afternoon, then light breeze — no midday dustiness
  • Humidity: low, giving clear distant views of mountains and coastline
  • Crowds: lighter than December–January peak

Sunrise and Sunset

Socotra sits at approximately 12°N latitude. This means sunrise and sunset times vary by only about 1.5 hours across the entire year — unlike high-latitude destinations where summer nights are short or winters bring early dark. Year-round, you get reliable golden hour windows morning and evening with predictable timing.

March for Endemic Flora

If wildflowers and endemic species are your priority, March is the month. Dragon blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari) are at their most dramatic in the highland mist. Bottle trees (Adenium obesum socotranum) flower pink against bare rock. The Dixam Plateau is at its most photogenic.

Booking Lead Time

December and January are the most competitive. Book 3–6 months ahead for peak season. April and March trips can often be arranged 4–6 weeks out.
