Socotra Seasonal Calendar

Socotra is an island with two weathers. From October to April the skies are clear, the seas are calm, and the whole island is open. From May to September the khareef monsoon shuts the south coast and most operators close for the year. Here is the month-by-month breakdown.

January

  • Access: open. Peak dry season, calm seas on the north coast.
  • Wildlife: Egyptian vulture nesting; endemic sunbirds active at flowering trees.
  • Photography: strong dry-season light, occasional dust haze in the highlands. Golden hour is crisp.
  • Note: January 2026 weather stranding is a reminder to carry buffer days on either end of the trip.

February

Peak
  • Access: open. Shoulder-to-peak window; temperatures climb into the high 20s.
  • Bloom: bottle tree (Adenium) pink bloom begins on coastal rock faces.
  • Wildlife: endemic bird nesting peaks. Best month for Socotra warbler and starling sightings.
  • Photography: low wind, clear skies, excellent for landscape and dunes.

March

Peak
  • Access: open. Arguably the best photography month of the year.
  • Bloom: bottle tree pink blossom at peak; frankincense resin harvest begins pre-khareef.
  • Astrophotography: Milky Way galactic core rises in the pre-dawn sky, rating 5 out of 5.
  • Photography: calm seas, low wind, warm but manageable temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees.

April

Peak
  • Access: open, the last month of the main season. Operators close late April for khareef prep.
  • Bloom: bottle tree still blooming early April; frankincense harvest concludes.
  • Astrophotography: galactic core visible earlier each night, prime Milky Way window.
  • Photography: warm (30 to 33 degrees), low wind, most consistent conditions of the year.

May

  • Access: closing. Khareef monsoon begins to build; south coast becomes unreliable.
  • Wind: rises sharply on the south and east coasts. North stays workable early in the month.
  • Wildlife: seabird activity high before the monsoon; endemic reptiles more visible on cooling ground.
  • Photography: dust and high wind reduce clarity. Avoid for serious photography trips.

June

  • Access: effectively closed. Khareef southwest monsoon at full strength.
  • Conditions: the south coast is shut — seas too rough to reach Noged, Qalansiyah exposed.
  • Wind: sustained 40 to 60 km/h on the south coast; sandstorms on the dunes.
  • Photography: not recommended. Flights do not operate for tourism.

July

  • Access: closed. Peak khareef; the entire south half of the island is inaccessible.
  • Climate: persistent cloud cover in the highlands; cool and damp in Hadibo.
  • Wildlife: hidden breeding season for many endemics — few sightings even for those on the island.
  • Photography: no commercial operators run trips. Skip this month.

August

  • Access: closed. Khareef continuing. Operators are in their off-season.
  • Wind: still strong on the south coast. North coast moderates slightly late in the month.
  • Wildlife: green flush begins in the highlands from monsoon moisture.
  • Photography: no operator access.

September

  • Access: transition. Khareef winds ease; some operators begin scouting runs.
  • Climate: the island flushes green briefly after monsoon rains. Wadis run.
  • Wildlife: raptor activity picks up as migrants arrive from Europe and Central Asia.
  • Photography: green-season shots are unusual and dramatic, but logistics are uncertain.

October

  • Access: opens. Commercial tours resume mid-to-late October.
  • Climate: residual green in the highlands, cooling temperatures (26 to 29 degrees).
  • Wildlife: migratory bird peak — Socotra is on a major flyway.
  • Photography: morning mist on the Firmihin plateau, dragon blood trees at their most dramatic.

November

  • Access: open. Early dry-season light begins.
  • Climate: comfortable temperatures, low wind, seas settling.
  • Wildlife: Egyptian vulture congregations; bird migration tail end.
  • Photography: dragon blood forests still show post-monsoon green, a short and rare window.

December

  • Access: open. High season begins, prices rise and flights book out.
  • Climate: cool evenings (18 to 22 degrees), warm days, calm seas.
  • Wildlife: endemic species settled into winter territories; excellent herp activity.
  • Photography: dry-season light, clear skies, low dust. One of the most reliable months.
