Coastal Dunes

Zone

Coastal Dunes

White sand beaches and towering dunes running along the southeast and northwest coasts. Wind-exposed and dramatic, these landscapes shift constantly. Arher and Zahek are here — places where desert meets ocean in a way that exists almost nowhere else on Earth.

Photography Conditions

Shooting this zone

Wind by month

Often strong (20 to 40 km/h), especially afternoons. The dunes are sculpted by this wind. Best light at sunrise before it builds.

Sunrise / sunset horizons

Low, open horizons in every direction. Sunrise over the Arabian Sea from Arher; sunset over the dunes themselves.

Endemic species

Socotra sparrow, Forbes-Watson's swift overhead, and the endemic chameleon in adjacent scrub. Dunes themselves are largely plant-free.
