Socotra in 10 days
Flying in on a Tuesday and out on the Thursday of the following week gives nine nights, the longest trip the twice-weekly schedule offers short of staying a fortnight. The two extra days over the standard loop are what let the Hagher mountains and the birding wadis into the route at all.

The stops
On the map
Every place this itinerary visits. The order is the route, not the distance.
Day by day
Day 1
Land and head inland
The same half day the eight-day loop opens with: out of the airport, up the canyon road, and onto the limestone plateau in time for the end of the light. It is how our own April 2026 trip began.
- Where you sleep
- Camp on the Diksam plateau
- The light
- Sunset from the plateau
Day 2
The dragon blood forest
A whole day given to the one landscape that has no equivalent anywhere else, instead of the single dawn session a shorter trip can afford. Camping in the trees sets up both ends of the day.
Stops
- Where you sleep
- Camp in Firmihin Forest
- The light
- Sunrise and then the night sky, which is what the forest is quietly best at
- Worth knowing
- The track in needs a 4x4. Cold after dark, and near-total darkness once the fire is out.
Day 3
Up into the Hagher mountains
The jagged spine of the island, and the day the extra nights exist for. Skand is the high point at 1,519 m, a long day hike from Tarhar village on the plateau, and it is in none of the four operator plans we read.
- Where you sleep
- Camp on the plateau
- The light
- Early. The view is a morning thing and nothing else
- Worth knowing
- Cloud builds reliably by the middle of the day, so the summit has to be reached early to be worth reaching. A fit guide is not optional, and wind at the top decides whether a drone leaves the bag.
Day 4
Birds at Ayhaft, then west
An early start in the canyon at Ayhaft, which is the island's best place to sit still and watch endemic birds, then the long transfer out to the north-west tip for the first of two nights at the lagoon.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Detwah Lagoon
- The light
- First light at Ayhaft, before the heat moves the birds into cover
- Worth knowing
- Jeep to the canyon mouth, then a moderate descent to the floor. Waiting for birds and walking through a canyon are different uses of the same morning: say which you want.
Day 5
The boat to Shoab
The skiff out of Qalansiyah to a beach with no road, and back to the same camp. On a ten-day trip this is the one day you can afford to lose to the weather and simply try again.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Detwah Lagoon
- The light
- Morning on the water
- Worth knowing
- Sea state decides it. This is the length of trip where a second attempt is possible.
Day 6
Down to the southern shore
The south coast in one unhurried run: a swim at Aomak, the stalactite chamber at Dagub with time to look at it properly, and the dunes for the end of the day.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Zahek dunes
- The light
- Sunset on the dunes
- Worth knowing
- Headlamp needed past the first chamber at Dagub, and the bats are a dusk event. Swell on this coast can rule out swimming.
Day 7
Kalisan canyon and the Homhil pool
East along the plateau, through the white canyon at Kalisan, up to the rock pool on the Homhil rim, and down to the dunes above the sea for the first of two nights at Arher.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Arher
- The light
- Mid-morning side light in the canyon, which is what it is for
- Worth knowing
- The pool at Homhil is a rocky, exposed walk that takes most of a morning there and back. A guide who knows the southeastern routes is required for Kalisan.
Day 8
Hoq Cave
The steep climb up to Hoq and back takes the morning and the legs. The rest of the day is the beach, the cliff caves at low tide and the dunes, which is what the second night at Arher is for.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Arher
- The light
- Sunrise on the dunes from camp, before the wind arrives
- Worth knowing
- Some operators leave Hoq out because of the cliff approach. On a ten-day trip there is no reason to.
Day 9
The eastern cape and the reef
Dawn at the cape where two seas meet, then the north coast back towards town with a snorkel over the reef at Dihamri, and the last night inside reach of the airport.
- Where you sleep
- Camp near Hadibo
- The light
- Sunrise at Ras Erissel
- Worth knowing
- High wind and a rough 4x4 track at the cape. Leave nesting seabirds alone in the breeding season.
Day 10
Hadibo, then the Thursday flight
The market in the morning, then the airport for the Thursday service to Jeddah, which refuels at Mukalla for about 45 minutes on the way.
Stops
- Worth knowing
- Keep a buffer night in Jeddah. With two flights a week, a missed onward connection costs days rather than hours.
Your operator sets the real route. Wind, sea state and the season reorder it, and the order below is a worked example rather than a product you can book.
What this itinerary skips
Moomi plateau, Rosh Cape, the south-western dunes and the outer islands.
Cutting whole excursions beats shortening every stop. A plateau dawn and a boat crossing each need a morning of their own, so the honest way to shorten a trip is to lose one of them rather than hurry both.
