Socotra in 6 days
Fly in on a Thursday, out on the following Tuesday, and you have five nights on the island. That is enough for the dragon blood plateau and the western lagoon country if you give up the south coast and the long cave walks.

The stops
On the map
Every place this itinerary visits. The order is the route, not the distance.
Day by day
Day 1
Land, then climb to the plateau
The flight lands about 14:30, so day one is half a day. Clearing the airport and driving up to the limestone plateau uses most of it, and the canyon on the way in is the first stop worth getting out of the car for.
- Where you sleep
- Camp on the Diksam plateau
- The light
- Sunset from the plateau rim, which is one of the three times of day Diksam is at its best
- Worth knowing
- A short day by arrival time, not by choice. Keep it to things you can abandon if the flight is late.
Day 2
The dragon blood forest at first light
Firmihin is the largest dragon blood tree forest on earth, 550 hectares and more than 35,500 trees, and the reason most people come. Sleeping on the plateau is what puts you in the forest at dawn rather than driving towards it.
- Where you sleep
- Camp on the plateau
- The light
- Sunrise in the forest. Firmihin is a sunrise and a night place, not a midday one
- Worth knowing
- The track into the forest needs a 4x4, and nights on the plateau are cold even in April.
Day 3
West to the lagoon
The drive from the plateau to the island's north-west tip is the first of two long transfers; the crossing east on day five is longer. It ends at the lagoon, where the camp is close enough to the water that the next morning costs you no driving at all.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Detwah Lagoon
- The light
- Detwah reads best at sunrise and after dark, so the arrival afternoon is for swimming, not photographs
- Worth knowing
- A long day in the car.
Day 4
By boat to Shoab
Shoab can only be reached by sea, on a skiff out of Qalansiyah, and the crossing is the day. Coming back to the same camp means the boat can run late without costing you anything else.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Detwah Lagoon
- The light
- Morning on the beach, which is when the sea is usually calmest
- Worth knowing
- The crossing depends on the sea. Ask your operator what the day becomes if the boat does not go.
Day 5
East to Homhil and Arher
Crossing the island east gives you the Homhil plateau, where dragon blood, frankincense and bottle trees grow together, and ends at the dunes above the sea at Arher. Two landscapes and a long drive between them.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Arher
- The light
- You arrive at Arher for the end of the day and shoot it the next morning
- Worth knowing
- The hardest day of the six. The pool at Homhil is a rocky, exposed walk that takes most of a morning there and back, and hiking boots are not optional.
Day 6
Arher at dawn, then the airport
The dunes are calm and clean for an hour or two after dawn, which is the window this day exists for. After that it is the drive back to Hadibo and the afternoon flight to Jeddah.
- The light
- Sunrise at Arher. Wind usually makes a drone impossible later in the day
- Worth knowing
- A long morning drive on a flight day. Nothing should be scheduled that cannot be abandoned.
Your operator sets the real route. Wind, sea state and the season reorder it, and the order below is a worked example rather than a product you can book.
What this itinerary skips
The south coast, Hoq Cave, Wadi Kalisan, Dihamri, Ras Erissel, Rosh Cape, Moomi plateau and the Hagher mountains.
Cutting whole excursions beats shortening every stop. A plateau dawn and a boat crossing each need a morning of their own, so the honest way to shorten a trip is to lose one of them rather than hurry both.
