Socotra in 8 days
Eight days and seven nights is the length operators build their fixed departures around, and it fits both flight pairings: Tuesday to Tuesday or Thursday to Thursday. It is the shortest length that reaches the plateau, the south coast, the eastern dunes and the western lagoon without hurrying any of them.
- Days
- 8
- Nights
- 7
- Flights
- Tuesday to Tuesday, or Thursday to Thursday
- Pace
- Steady. One long day on the south coast, two camps used twice
- Who it suits
- A first visit that wants the whole island rather than one corner
The stops
On the map
Every place this itinerary visits. The order is the route, not the distance.
Day by day
Day 1
Land, canyon, plateau camp
The flight lands about 14:30. Driving straight inland to the canyon and up onto the limestone plateau turns the remainder into a real half day instead of a hotel evening in Hadibo.
- Where you sleep
- Camp on the Diksam plateau
- The light
- Sunset from the plateau
- Worth knowing
- One of the four plans we read does this. One drives straight west and camps at Detwah. The other two start from a Hadibo hotel, one heading inland the next morning and one east.
Day 2
Firmihin at dawn, then the south coast
Dawn in the dragon blood forest, then the long drive down to the southern shore for a swim, the stalactite chamber at Dagub and the dunes where the desert runs straight into the sea.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Zahek dunes
- The light
- Sunrise at Firmihin, sunset on the Zahek dunes
- Worth knowing
- The fullest day of the trip, and the one with the least slack in it. Dagub needs a headlamp past the entrance chamber, and the south-coast swell can make swimming unwise.
Day 3
Kalisan canyon and the Homhil pool
From the south-coast camp to the pale limestone canyon at Kalisan, up to the rock pool on the Homhil plateau edge, and down to the sand under the dunes at Arher for the night. One of the four plans we read runs this same combination from the same south-coast start.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Arher
- The light
- Kalisan in the morning, which is when our place notes put it at its best
- Worth knowing
- The pool at Homhil is a rocky, exposed walk that takes most of a morning there and back. Kalisan needs a guide who knows the southeastern routes.
Day 4
Hoq Cave, then the dunes
The climb to Hoq takes the morning and most of the effort of the week. The afternoon is deliberately empty: the dunes, the cliff caves reachable at low tide, and nothing scheduled.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Arher
- The light
- Sunrise on the dunes before you leave camp
- Worth knowing
- Two of the four plans make Hoq optional or an either-or against the canyon, because the cliff approach is steep. Ask for it specifically if you want it.
Day 5
The eastern cape and the reef
The cape where the Arabian Sea meets the Indian Ocean at first light, then west along the north coast to snorkel the reef at Dihamri, and a night near Hadibo before the run out west.
- Where you sleep
- Camp near Hadibo
- The light
- Sunrise at Ras Erissel, morning on the reef
- Worth knowing
- The cape is fully exposed and often windy, and a 4x4 track is the only way in. Nesting seabirds should be left alone in the breeding season.
Day 6
Across to Detwah Lagoon
A transfer day out to the north-west tip, ending at the lagoon and the fishing village beside it. The afternoon is for wading the tidal channel rather than for driving further.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Detwah Lagoon
- The light
- The lagoon is a sunrise and a night subject, so this afternoon is not the one to plan around
Day 7
The boat to Shoab
Out of Qalansiyah by skiff to a beach with no road to it, then back to the same camp. All four plans we read include this crossing. None of their pages says what happens when the sea is wrong, which is why you should ask.
- Where you sleep
- Camp at Detwah Lagoon
- The light
- Morning at Shoab
- Worth knowing
- Sea state decides it. Budget the crossing as a half day and name it when you book.
Day 8
Lagoon at dawn, then Jeddah
First light on the lagoon from camp, then the drive east to the airport for the afternoon flight. The Socotra to Jeddah leg stops at Mukalla for about 45 minutes to refuel.
Stops
- The light
- Sunrise at Detwah
- Worth knowing
- Plan a buffer night in Jeddah. The flight runs twice a week, so a missed connection is not a few hours, it is several days.
Your operator sets the real route. Wind, sea state and the season reorder it, and the order below is a worked example rather than a product you can book.
What this itinerary skips
The Hagher mountains, Moomi plateau, Rosh Cape and the Steroh and Hayf dunes.
Cutting whole excursions beats shortening every stop. A plateau dawn and a boat crossing each need a morning of their own, so the honest way to shorten a trip is to lose one of them rather than hurry both.
