Socotra in February

Peak seasonSeason runs October to April

February is the best all-round month on the island: the bottle tree bloom starts, the wind is already falling, and the December to January booking crunch is behind you.

Average climate for Socotra in February, 2001 to 2025
February2001 to 2025
Average day high27.4 C
Average night low22.3 C
Rain5 mm for the month
Wind17.7 km/h mean
Humidity65 percent

Day high and night low are the average of each day's maximum and minimum in NASA POWER's daily data; rain, wind and humidity are its monthly climatology. Both v2.10.1, averaged over January 2001 to December 2025, accessed 2026-11-06. One grid cell of about half a degree covers Hadibo, the Diksam plateau and the south coast, so these are island-lowland figures: the plateau and the Haggeher mountains are cooler and take far more moisture than they show.

Getting there, and what is open

February is open and, on the site's own best-time guide, the best all-round month of the season. It sits just after the December and January crunch, which is the practical argument for it: you have more choice of operator and of group size at a similar price, and crowds are moderate rather than peak.

Allow two to four months for February dates. Flights are the same twice-weekly Yemenia service from Jeddah on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a refuelling stop on the return leg, and the return fare runs roughly $950 to $1,200.

Sea and wind

The wind has started to drop. February's monthly mean is 17.7 km/h, down from January's 21.2, and it keeps falling through March and April. Boat days and drone mornings get steadily more dependable across these three months.

Rainfall is 5 mm for the month, the start of the driest stretch of the year, at 65 percent humidity. Nights average 22.3 C, the coolest of the year by a tenth of a degree over January, and days 27.4 C, so camping is as comfortable now as it was in midwinter.

Bloom and wildlife

This is the month the island's most photographed plant performs. The Socotra bottle tree, Adenium obesum subsp. socotranum, flowers at its peak in February and March, and it does it while completely leafless: pink to magenta trumpet flowers up to 13 centimetres across emerging straight from bare, swollen, pale grey-green wood. Its conservation status is not formally assessed at subspecies level, so treat the status you see quoted elsewhere with care.

The bloom pulls the birds with it. The Socotra sunbird, one of the island's main pollinators, is at its most active from February to April precisely because the Adenium is flowering, and it returns to the same blooms again and again, which is what makes it photographable at all.

The frankincense woodland at Homhil is in its fresh-resin window in February and March, amber exudate rather than hardened nodules. Boswellia elongata was uplisted to Endangered in 2025, and nine of Socotra's eleven Boswellia species are now Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Photography

The leafless flowering state is far more photogenic than the leafy phase, and the species notes are specific about how to use it: 24 to 50 mm for the whole caudex against plateau or sky, 70 to 200 mm to isolate flower clusters, and backlight at golden hour, which makes the pale trunk glow and the pink flowers read as translucent.

Look for cliff-edge specimens if you want compression with a long lens. For the sunbird, the method is to pick a flowering Adenium and wait rather than to walk and hope.

February questions

When do Socotra's bottle trees flower?+
February and March are the peak, with the tree leafless and covered in pink to magenta trumpet flowers. There is a secondary flush in October and November. From May to September the tree is dormant and sparse, which is one more reason the monsoon months are not worth the risk for a plant trip.
Is February the best month to visit Socotra?+
It is the best all-round month on this site's reading. The weather is settled, the wind mean is down to 17.7 km/h from January's 21.2, rainfall is 5 mm, the bottle trees are flowering and the peak-season booking crunch has passed. April beats it for photography specifically, and March beats it for plants at their fullest.
How far ahead should I book a February trip?+
Two to four months is the published guidance for February, against three to six for December and January. The binding constraint is the twice-weekly Jeddah flight rather than ground capacity, so secure the seat first and let the ground arrangements follow it.
