Socotra in January
January is open and fully bookable, with the coolest days of the year and more wind than the three months that follow, which suits walkers and campers better than it suits boat days.
| January | 2001 to 2025 |
|---|---|
| Average day high | 26.6 C |
| Average night low | 22.4 C |
| Rain | 8 mm for the month |
| Wind | 21.2 km/h mean |
| Humidity | 66 percent |
Day high and night low are the average of each day's maximum and minimum in NASA POWER's daily data; rain, wind and humidity are its monthly climatology. Both v2.10.1, averaged over January 2001 to December 2025, accessed 2026-11-06. One grid cell of about half a degree covers Hadibo, the Diksam plateau and the south coast, so these are island-lowland figures: the plateau and the Haggeher mountains are cooler and take far more moisture than they show.
Getting there, and what is open
The season runs October to April and January sits in the middle of it, so everything that operates at all is operating. Flights are the constraint rather than ground capacity: Yemenia flies Jeddah to Socotra twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so your arrival date is chosen from those two departures and not from the calendar. The Air Arabia route from Abu Dhabi is not running for the 2026 to 2027 season.
January shares the December peak for demand and is among the hardest months to book. Allow three to six months for January dates, the longest lead time of the year.
One January is still shaping how people plan this month. In January 2026, fighting on the Yemeni mainland closed Yemeni airspace and several hundred visitors waited on the island for days. It was not a weather event, and it happened in peak season with a full flight schedule behind it, which is the reason to carry spare days at both ends rather than to avoid the month.
Sea and wind
January is the windiest of the first four months of the year. The monthly mean is 21.2 km/h, against 17.7 in February, 13.6 in March and 11.1 in April. Published research describes the island as under the north-east monsoon from October to April, and December and January are where that breeze shows most in the figures, so a drone flight or a dune morning is less of a certainty now than later in the season.
Days average 26.6 C, the coolest of the year, and nights 22.4 C, a tenth of a degree above February's. Day and night sit only about four degrees apart, so cool here means mild rather than cold. Rainfall is 8 mm for the month at 66 percent humidity. The plateau and the Haggeher are cooler than these figures, which come from a grid cell too coarse to see the high ground separately.
Bloom and wildlife
January falls between the two flowering windows of the Socotra bottle tree, whose peak is February and March and whose secondary flush was October and November. The frankincense trees at Homhil show their dry-season form, bare branches and hardened resin nodules, with fresh resin reported later, in February and March.
For birds this is inside the October to April window the species notes describe as the better one for photography: cooler air, more active birds and thinner vegetation to see through. The Socotra starling and the Socotra golden-winged grosbeak are resident all year, and the sunbird works whatever is in flower.
The Socotra chameleon is between its own two windows. Egg-laying happens in December and hatching in April and May, so January holds neither the visible males of the mating season nor the hatchlings.
Photography
January has the latest sunrises of the year, close to 05:50 in the second half of the month and more than half an hour later than in mid-April. The shift is small all the same: across the whole year sunrise moves by under an hour and day length by only about an hour and a half, so no month here costs you a usable morning.
The 21.2 km/h mean is the number to plan around. The sheltered interior holds up: the canyons and the plateau forests are rated low for wind sensitivity in the place records, while the exposed capes and most of the dune fields are rated high.
