Socotra in April
April is the calmest, driest and least humid month of the year and the strongest one for photography, and it is also the last month of the season.
| April | 2001 to 2025 |
|---|---|
| Average day high | 31.7 C |
| Average night low | 26.1 C |
| Rain | 3 mm for the month |
| Wind | 11.1 km/h mean |
| Humidity | 63 percent |
Day high and night low are the average of each day's maximum and minimum in NASA POWER's daily data; rain, wind and humidity are its monthly climatology. Both v2.10.1, averaged over January 2001 to December 2025, accessed 2026-11-06. One grid cell of about half a degree covers Hadibo, the Diksam plateau and the south coast, so these are island-lowland figures: the plateau and the Haggeher mountains are cooler and take far more moisture than they show.
Getting there, and what is open
April is the final month of the October to April season, and it is lighter than the December peak, so the well-known viewpoints are less contested. Four to eight weeks of notice is often enough.
The one thing to build in is slack on the way home. April sits against the edge of the khareef, and the monsoon's start date moves from year to year, so a return leg with no margin in it is carrying a risk that the same leg in February is not.
Sea and wind
April holds four of the twelve-month extremes, and three of them point the same way. The mean wind is 11.1 km/h, the lowest of the year and under a quarter of July's 47.3. Rainfall is 3 mm, the least. Humidity is 63 percent, the lowest. The fourth is heat: days average 31.7 C, the warmest of the year, narrowly ahead of May's 31.5, with nights at 26.1 C.
The pattern on the ground, as the best-time guide puts it, is calm until early afternoon, which is what makes drone work dependable and keeps the dunes crisp. Low humidity is the other half of it: distant mountain and coastline views hold their detail in a way they do not in midwinter haze.
Bloom and wildlife
The bottle tree bloom is at its end in early April rather than at its peak, which was February and March. The Socotra sunbird's peak ends here too: it is about all through the dry season, October to May, but its busiest weeks are February to April while the Adenium still has flowers to offer.
April is also the start of one of the two windows the specialist birding source in the corpus names, April to May, the other being November. And it is the better half of the Socotra chameleon's year: hatching happens in April and May, which puts hatchlings in the low vegetation of the wadis. Adults reach up to 38.5 centimetres and carry the outsized occipital lobes that gave the species its name.
The Socotra starling is still nesting in the dragon blood groves, a window that runs March to May.
Photography
This is the month the site names for photography, and the numbers above are the argument: warm low-angle morning light with noticeably less haze than midwinter, calm air for the first half of the day, and the clearest long views of the year.
The night sky is at its most convenient now. The galactic core rises around 10pm in mid-April and close to 9pm by the month's end, so a full Milky Way session no longer costs a night's sleep, against a measured sky quality reading of 21.88.
