Socotra in May
May is outside the season and the khareef can arrive at any point in it, which makes it the riskiest month of the year to be holding a booking.
| May | 2001 to 2025 |
|---|---|
| Average day high | 31.5 C |
| Average night low | 27.5 C |
| Rain | 19 mm for the month |
| Wind | 19.3 km/h mean |
| Humidity | 72 percent |
Day high and night low are the average of each day's maximum and minimum in NASA POWER's daily data; rain, wind and humidity are its monthly climatology. Both v2.10.1, averaged over January 2001 to December 2025, accessed 2026-11-06. One grid cell of about half a degree covers Hadibo, the Diksam plateau and the south coast, so these are island-lowland figures: the plateau and the Haggeher mountains are cooler and take far more moisture than they show.
Getting there, and what is open
The season runs October to April and the site counts the khareef as roughly May to September. The published research dates the south-west monsoon from June, and May is the margin between the two: some years the monsoon arrives early and eats into the month, some years it does not, and nobody publishes a date you could plan on.
The best-time guide's verdict on May is that nothing is reliable and cancellation risk climbs, with very few visitors on the island. If your dates can move by a fortnight, April is the same trip without the risk.
Sea and wind
The monthly mean wind of 19.3 km/h looks moderate, and it is the one figure on this page not to trust on its own. An average cannot show an onset: a calm fortnight followed by a blown-out one gives the same number. June's mean is 39.7 km/h, so the climb happens somewhere inside May or just after it.
The other May figures are less ambiguous. Nights average 27.5 C, the warmest of the year, days 31.5 C, humidity jumps to 72 percent from April's 63, and 19 mm of rain falls, the second wettest month in the record. Once the monsoon is in, the published research describes high waves on the south coast and gale-force winds on the north, so an early onset closes both sides at once.
Bloom and wildlife
Several of the island's wildlife windows run into May. The specialist birding source in the corpus names April to May as one of its two windows, Socotra chameleon hatchlings are in the low wadi vegetation through April and May, and the starling's nesting season in the dragon blood groves runs March to May. All of them are reachable only while the ground is.
The bottle tree's dormant window begins here and runs to September, and the species notes say plainly to avoid those months for it.
Photography
May is not a photography month. Humidity is up nine points on April, which takes the long views; the wind is rising, which takes the dunes and the drone; and the Adenium bloom that justifies a spring trip has finished.
Good in May
No place in the catalogue lists May in its season. The nearest month the place records count as open is April.
