Getting there, and what is open

October opens the October to April season and, with April, is one of the two lightest months for numbers. Six to ten weeks of lead time is the published guidance, so an October trip is a decision you can still make in late summer, unlike a December one.

The route is the twice-weekly Yemenia flight from Jeddah on Tuesdays and Thursdays, roughly $950 to $1,200 return, with a refuelling stop on the return leg. The Air Arabia route from Abu Dhabi is not operating for the 2026 to 2027 season, so Jeddah is not one option among several. Trips run on US dollars in cash because there are no cash machines on the island, and a drone costs $100 in cash on arrival.

Sea and wind

October is the biggest improvement on the calendar. The mean wind falls to 13.5 km/h, about 2.4 km/h above April's annual low, and humidity drops to 69 percent from the 82 of August and September. That makes it one of the better months for the boat day to Shoab Beach, which the place notes say leaves in the morning and returns before midday, when the wind builds.

Rain is the one figure that does not improve: 15 mm, five times April's and more than any of February, March or April. Days average 29.7 C and nights 25.1 C.

Bloom and wildlife

The Socotra bottle tree has a secondary flowering flush in October and November. It is the smaller of its two windows, the main one being February and March, and it is the tree's only flowering before February. The Diksam plateau is one of the two places the species notes give for its highest densities.

October opens the Socotra chameleon's mating season, which runs October to November and is when the males are most visible. The wadis are where to look: the species is diurnal and arboreal, spending its active hours in shrub and tree canopies up to six metres, and the notes name Wadi Dirhur, Wadi Ayhaft and Wadi Qama as the best sites.

The October to April window also opens for the resident endemic birds, which the species notes prefer for cooler air, more active birds and thinner vegetation. On migration, the specialist birding source in the corpus names November and April to May rather than October.

Photography

If a late rain has fallen, the dragon blood forests can still carry the green the monsoon left, and October is the first of the two months that can show it. Firmihin is the one to spend it on, 550 hectares holding more than 35,500 trees, where sunrise and golden hour are the definitive windows because the backlit canopies read as translucent amber.

The night sky is not the reason to come now. The galactic core season the sources give is March and April, so October is a landscape and forest month rather than an astrophotography one, even though the dark skies themselves do not change.
